Native Voices Matter
Indigenous nations are still here, but their people and stories deserve to be heard, preserved and need us to listen and help in as many ways as we can. Growing up in the four corners of the US, many of these links are directed to the Dine (Navajo) nation. I live currently on Mohegan land and support their stable economy here locally. But many indigenous nations do not have such access and can use our help. The links below are to guide you as a starting point but I implore you to seek out your local nation, listen and remain respectful of those nations and cultures.
◊ Emmy Scanga ◊
Emmy Scanga was born and raised in Colorado. Always connected to the outdoors and the world around them, they began crafting tales of the spirits, animals and people that inhabited their imagination. Their grandmother, matriarch of their family, instilled their Chicano culture through stories, fiber crafts, and food. Many of the tales you see in the Threads of Fate series were retellings by their abuelita.Like many Chicanos, our roots are muddled, shrouded in fear, colonialism and assimilation. Emmy strives to honor their culture, embrace the accent, spanglish, food of the southwest that undoubtedly is the result of cultures intertwining with the local Indigenous nations of the Four Corners area. Though blurry, Emmy is working to decolonize, honor and respect the people that have long been here, claiming no indigeny. Yes, their family has been here for generations but when and where their Mexican heritage originated has been lost with the elders of the family that have passed on.Beyond their desire to heal, challenge the ugly sides of their own culture, and advocate for their disability, they hope that you find the love, connection and representation of the most vulnerable communities within the pages of their stories.Emmy (they/them) is a non binary Chicano author who has led a life of creativity in many fields. From a craft filled childhood in Colorado, Emmy recently stepped away from designing and writing crochet patterns to finally pursue writing to life a world that has been building since 2001. Aiming to pay homage to their late abuelita (grandmother), Emmy taps into their love for all things mystical, haunting and those subjects hidden within the lives we live. Pushing for more representation of those around them, all of these stories are written to showcase not just their Chicano roots, but Indigenous, Black and gay siblings.Emmy currently lives in New England with their partner Joe and void cat River Tam. You can find Emmy often crocheting, weaving, playing games and furthering decolonizing their personal witchcraft.
Why is the ebook free and the physical copy a charge?
If I could make it free I would, but it costs to print a book. And to ship it. But I make nothing. I have priced my books to cover the cost to print them, but at the moment I do not wish to make money off the tales as many of the characters in my books reflect the hurt and trauma of their respective communities and it just feels icky to make a profit off of that.
So how do you make money?
I don't. I am disabled. I cannot work a traditional job. I also do not qualify for disability programs. I do my best to make ends meet with odd jobs (near mostly online) and what little I make from pattern sales. Which if I am honest, I don't want to charge for either. But in the society we live in, money means survival. My partner covers where my ends do not meet but we aren't swimming in cash either.
But your art is good and deserves payment, is there no where to support you?
You can tip me. I do have a Ko-fi page that I use for crochet that allows you to simply throw me a coffee or any amount you wish. Those things I very much appreciate and add up quick for me. Though it is never required, I will not deny how much those tips help me survive and find a small measure of stability.
Why is there no kindle edition?
So Kindle does NOT allow free books. At all. I have tried every workaround but cannot figure out how to make it free without getting some sort of royalty. Perhaps I can find a way in the future, but for now you can use any of the links for the book to download the book or use the Payhip link to manually add the ebook to your kindle. It is a lil bit of a process that does require a computer, but once you get it on there, it is yours to keep.
Are there more books coming?
YES! Threads of Awakening was a story that has been a long time coming. I mean Elric and Xochel have been in my mind since 2001 (HIGH SCHOOL) for me. And in that process, the rest of the Threads of Fate series just unfolded. It will take some time as I plan out and write those, but I am aiming to have the next book: 'Threads of Adventure' out by end of 2025.
